Frequently asked questions

Do I have to pay to use the scanner?

No. PillTime defaults to Google Gemini's free tier. You get your own free API key at aistudio.google.com/app/apikey — no credit card required — and paste it into the App's Settings. That's it.

Does PillTime see my medications or my health data?

No. PillTime has no backend server. Your medications, schedule, and dose history live only on your device. When you scan a bottle, the photo goes directly from your phone to your chosen AI provider (Google or OpenAI) under your own API key — we are not in the middle of that connection.

Does PillTime store my name or my doctor's name?

No. The AI scanner is explicitly instructed to never extract your patient name, your prescribing clinician's name, your prescription number, or any insurance/plan information. If any of those fields slip through anyway, they are scrubbed on your device before they are written to storage. See the Privacy Policy for the full data-flow description.

Why does the camera tell me to "cover the patient name with my thumb"?

Belt-and-suspenders privacy. The AI is told not to read your name, and we scrub it client-side if it does — but the best guarantee is that the name was never in the photo to begin with. Cover the patient-name line of the label with your thumb when you snap the bottle.

The scanner read my drug wrong. What do I do?

AI vision is not perfect, especially on curved bottles, faded labels, or partially obscured text. You have three options:

Always verify the drug name, strength, and frequency against your actual prescription label before saving.

My reminder didn't fire. Why?

Local notifications depend on your device's operating system, battery state, do-not-disturb settings, and notification permissions. Common causes:

For time-critical medications, always use independent safeguards (pill organizer, partner reminder, pharmacy auto-call) in addition to PillTime.

How do I delete all of my data?

Delete the app from your device. Because PillTime has no backend, that removes everything — there is no server-side copy to follow up on.

Does PillTime work on Apple Watch?

Yes. Your dose reminders automatically mirror to a paired Apple Watch, and you can tap ✓ Taken, Snooze 10 min, or Skip right from your wrist — no need to open the app on your phone. A dedicated watchOS companion app is on the roadmap.

Can I export my medication list for a doctor visit?

Yes. Settings → Doctor Visit Summary generates a clean plain-text list of every medication you're taking, with your adherence numbers — no patient name, no prescriber name, no Rx numbers, no insurance. You can share it via AirDrop, Mail, Notes, Print, or save it to Files.

How do I opt out of the arbitration clause?

Within 30 days of first accepting the Terms, email legal@pilltime.app with subject "Arbitration opt-out" and include your full name and the device on which you installed PillTime. See Terms §14(d) for the full opt-out language.

I'm a health plan, PBM, or value-based-care group. Can we offer PillTime to our members?

Yes — that's exactly who we built the privacy architecture for. Reach out at partners@pilltime.app. We offer co-branding, member onboarding flows, and optional opt-in aggregate adherence reporting — all without ever touching PHI.

I think I found a security issue.
